12 nations have qualified to the tournament and Nigeria is Africa’s sole representative after beating France and Mali to book its place in Sydney.

Late last year, members of the team protested failure by the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBFF) to settle outstanding payments for the team’s participation in the Olympics Games in Tokyo. The payments were settled later on.
