Basketballghana.com can confirm Zamalek Basketball Club has appointed former Nigeria National Men’s Basketball Team Head Coach Will Voigt as its new Head Coach.
The news was announced recently since the Egyptian team parted ways with Greek Trainer Vangelis Angelou after a poor start to the domestic basketball season.
Voigt heads to Zamalek with a lot of experience and success on the African continent after leading Nigeria to win the 2015 African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
He has also coached club sides including Telekom Baskets Bonn in Germany’s top flight division and Bakersfield Jam in the NBA Gatorade League (G-League) plus the Angolan National Team.
His appointment comes at a time Zamalek is preparing to represent Africa in the 2022 FIBA Intercontinental Cup to be held in Cairo, Egypt from February 11 to February 13.
Zamalek has been drawn against Spanish side Hereda San Pablo Burgos in the tournament. Brazilian side Flamengo plays Lakeland Magic from the NBA G-League in the other matchup.
Zamalek beat Tunisian side US Monastir 76-63 in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) final to represent Africa in the upcoming championship.
