Nigeria’s National Women Basketball Team (D’Tigress) has won the 2021 FIBA Women’s African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
The team beat Mali 70-59 in the final game played in Yaounde, Cameroon with the win guaranteeing Nigeria its third African title on the bounce after wins in 2017 and 2019. (Click highlighted to watch game highlights)
Victoria Macaulay led all players with 15 points and added two rebounds and three other players scored in double figures including MVP winner Adaora Elonu who registered 12 points, four rebounds and two assists.
Elonu averaged 10.4 points, five rebounds and 2.4 assists in 30.1 minutes across five games; the 31 year old Forward plies her trade in Spain for Spar Girona.
Winning the African title is a perfect response from Nigeria who had a disappointing run at the Tokyo Olympics.
Sika Kone and Mariam Coulibaly scored 12 and 13 points respectively for Mali but their efforts weren’t enough to get the win in a successful tournament for the West African nation.
Prior to the game, host nation Cameroon beat Senegal 53-49 to clinch bronze. (Click highlighted text to watch game highlights)
