Basketballghana.com can report Ivory Coast and Senegal will compete against each other in the semifinal of the 2021 FIBA African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
The teams will battle for a place in this year’s final game on Saturday, September 4; the tournament is due to end on Sunday, September 5 at the Kigali Arena.
Ivory Coast booked its place in the semis thanks to a dominant 98-50 win over Guinea while Senegal had it tough dealing with Angola but eventually emerging with a 79-74 win over the 11 time African champions.
American-Ivorian Matt Costello led Ivory Coast with 14 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes; Costello plays for Baskonia in the Endesa League after his stint with NBA side San Antonio Spurs.
After bagging its first wins in the tournament for the first time in 36 years, Guinea proved no match for the Ivorians with Abdoulaye Sy the only player on the Guinea team to score in double figures (13 points).
Senegal’s top players came through for the Teranga Lions with Brancou Badio of Spanish side Barcelona registering 14 points and five assists and Atlanta Hawks Center Gorgui Dieng adding 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Tunisia plays South Sudan and Cape Verde plays Uganda later today.
