The 2021 FIBA African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) runs from August 24 to September 5 in Kigali, Rwanda and is the 30th edition of the continental competition.

South Sudan’s Basketball Federation reported the first training session for the team via its official twitter handle; Ghana’s leading basketball portal gathers more players are expected to arrive at the camp in the coming days.

This is South Sudan’s first ever qualification to an international basketball tournament after gaining independence in 2011 and is Africa’s youngest country.

Ivey

The team is to be led by former 10 year NBA veteran player Royal Ivey who was appointed earlier this year to replace Luol Deng. Former Los Angeles Lakers and two time NBA All Star Deng qualified the team to the AfroBasket and doubles as Head of the Federation. (Click highlighted text to view story)

Sudan is in Group D with Senegal, Cameroon and Uganda; 16 teams are due to compete in the tournament.
