Basketballghana.com can confirm Atlanta Hawks Power Forward/ Center Bruno Fernandes won’t compete for Angola at the 2021 FIBA African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
This year’s AfroBasket takes place in Rwanda with games to be played at the Kigali Center from August 24 to September 5 with 16 teams competing.
The most successful nation on the African continent, Angola, has been drawn in Group A alongside host Rwanda, DR Congo and Cape Verde.
Fernando indicated he would be available to report to camp on August 16 just a little over a week before the tournament commences due to the NBA Summer League.
Coach Josep Claros has already named his team to head to camp to commence preparation for the tournament. Angola has missed out on the African title since winning it in 2013 when the competition was held in Ivory Coast.
6 foot 9 inch Fernando was drafted 34th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft and averaged 4.3 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.7 minutes across 56 games for Atlanta Hawks.
