Basketballghana.com can confirm Senegal won’t compete in the Qualification Tournament to the Tokyo Olympics to be held later this year.
This is due to disruptions to the team’s preparations by COVID 19 that has affected the team and has prevented The Lions from making the trip to Belgrade, Serbia for the mini tournament.
The news was confirmed by Basketball’s world governing body FIBA this evening with the qualification tournament tipping off on Tuesday, June 29.
Senegal was scheduled to play Italy and Puerto Rico in Serbia with the top two progressing to the semifinals in the race to seal the four remaining spots at the Olympics among 12 other countries.
The team was camped in Germany as they prepared for the trip but the reported COVID cases in its camp caused several delays and eventually derailing the team’s plans to travel to Serbia.
Tunisia and Angola are among the nations battling to seal a spot at the Olympics; Nigeria is the sole African country that has booked a spot at the Games.
