Basketballghana.com can confirm President of Basketball’s world governing body FIBA, Hamane Niang, has been accused of alleged sexual harassment of women.
This is reported to have happened during his time as President of Mali’s Basketball Federation from 1999 to 2007 and an investigation by FIBA has been launched into the matter.
According to the BBC, Hamane and three other officials Amadou Bamba, Coach Oumar Sissoko and official Hario Maiga were mentioned in the statement from FIBA that also highlighted “Fiba is committed to ensuring reports of such behavior are taken seriously and properly investigated.”
All persons involved in the alleged abuse have been suspended from all official duties while investigations are being carried out. FIBA First Vice President Sheik Saud Ali Al-Thani will act as Interim President
The report was filed on June 10 by the New York Times and Human Rights Watch prompting FIBA to launch an investigation into the allegation.
Niang became FIBA President in 2019 with the Malian taking over from Argentine Horacio Muratore.
