The top eight ranked teams progress to the playoffs where a single game elimination format will determine winners of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final game.

Originally planned to commence in March 2020 with games played across cities on the African continent, the BAL was postponed multiple times due to the corona virus pandemic.

The competition format has been altered to accommodate participating teams that are set to compete in a bubble-like environment.

The BAL is a partnership between the NBA and FIBA Africa and the league is the NBA’s first outside North America.
