Basketballghana.com understands the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) African wing (NBA Africa) and Basketball Africa League (BAL) are set to team up to launch an initiative aimed at empowering girls and women in basketball on the African continent.
The initiative was communicated on BAL’s official page on Twitter on International Women’s Day which falls on March 8. The day is set aside to recognize the achievement of women worldwide.
“As we mark the International Women’s Day, the BAL and NBA Africa are happy to launch an initiative across Africa for gender equality to break the stereotypes and barriers; empower girls and women and promote a greater financial inclusion” the statement read.
This initiative comes at a crucial time for females in the sport and beyond the sport; it also comes at a time when Africa had a female lead a Male team to the African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
Liz Mills led Kenya to the 2021 AfroBasket after helping the Morans secure qualification to the Championship for the first time in 28 years.
