Basketballghana.com can confirm five players in the Uganda National Men’s Basketball Team have tested positive for the corona virus.
This came prior to Uganda’s opening contest against Egypt in the final window of qualification games to the 2021 African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).
Uganda is in Group E with Egypt, Cape Verde and Morocco and needs a win to progress to the continental championship due to be staged in Kigali, Rwanda. Uganda has five points and lies second in the Group after bagging two wins in three games.
In the aftermath of the positive tests, FIBA stated, “FIBA has decided to postpone the games of Uganda in the upcoming FIBA AfroBasket 2021 qualifiers in Monastir, Tunisia with the health and safety of players, coaches and officials being the primary consideration”.
The window of qualification games commenced on Wednesday, February 17 and is due to end on Sunday, February 21 with games in Groups A, D and E to be staged in Yaounde, Cameroon.
Nigeria and Mali picked wins over South Sudan and Rwanda on Day One.
