Basketballghana.com can confirm Basketball Athletes won’t be awarded by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) this year.
This is according to Secretary of the Association Charles Osei Asibey in an interview with Ghana’s leading hoops portal as the Association continues to hand out Awards to outstanding Ghanaian athletes in the past year.
Disciplines including Football, Weightlifting, arm wrestling, athletics, rugby and boxing were considered for the award but basketball was one of several disciplines to be ignored by an independent Awards committee.
According to veteran Journalist Osei Asibey and Head of the Ghana Arm Wrestling Federation, there were little to no activities in basketball especially on the international stage to make the cut for consideration.
He therefore urged the basketball fraternity to amplify its activities in the coming years as the award scheme is subject to review to allow for more disciplines to be added.
Wheelchair Basketball Player Raphael Botsyo Nkegbe however, won the Para Athlete of the Year Award thanks to his exploits in Wheelchair racing. Nkegbe won Gold at the 2020 OCC Marathon in South Africa and the 2019 Desert Challenge in Florida, USA en route to qualifying to his fourth Paralympic Games.
