The level of basketball in Africa is still growing compared to other continents according to Senegal National Women’s Basketball Team Coach Cheick Sarr.
He made this statement in an interview with FIBA’s Julio Chitunda on the subject of coaching on the African continent and other matters related to the sport.
Sarr is a former Assistant Coach of Senegal’s Men’s National Team and led the team to the 2014 Basketball World Cup before switching to the Women’s Team.
“The level of basketball level [in Africa] is still growing compared to European or Asian basketball, and only a few are those African countries where requirement in terms of infrastructures and logistics are being met.” He said.
Under Sarr, the Lionesses have recorded success with a second round appearance at the Women’s Basketball World Cup held in Spain in 2018. Senegal placed second at the 2019 Women’s AfroBasket after falling to Nigeria in the final game.
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is one of several high profile initiatives on the continent to popularize basketball. The league’s inaugural season is on hold due to the COVID 19 pandemic.
