Giants of Africa Co-Founder Masai Ujiri has pointed out the reason behind postponing this year’s edition of the annual basketball development and skills program.
This year’s program was scheduled to take place in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali from August 16-22 but was moved to 2021 due to the spread of the corona virus.
A statement was released to announce the postponement and Ujiri, who doubles as Toronto Raptors President, indicated ensuring safety was behind the change in plans.
“One of the goals of the festival is to bring together all the diverse cultures that make up Africa to Rwanda. Social distancing is one of the tools to help fight this pandemic and coming together would contradict everything our healthcare experts are stressing we all do to help slow down this pandemic” he said.
The Giants of Africa program was planned to have several male and female participants under 18 from 11 African countries converge in Kigali for the weeklong event. Ujiri led Raptors to the team’s first ever NBA title in 2019.
