Bentil celebrates a basket against Barcelona in the EuroLeague last season with Calathes in background

Basketballghana.com can confirm Greek side Panathinaikos Basketball Club has started the process to exit the EuroLeague beginning next season. Ghana Forward Ben Bentil plays for the Athens based team.

Giannokopoulos

This comes in the wake of Panathinaikos sending a letter signed by President Mano Papadopoulos to EuroLeague CEO Jordi Bertomeu for termination of a 10 year participation deal that was signed between the two bodies in 2015.

Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos had made the team’s position clear in a press briefing held this past week where he also stated the team was up for sale to the tune 25 million Euros.

Giannakopoulos-whose family has owned the team since 1987-said the team has plans to join the Basketball Champions League going forward.

The reason behind the switch from Europe’s most respected continental championship is down to what Giannakopoulos cited as ‘lack of clarity’ concerning revenues.

Bentil played his first season with Panathinaikos in the 2019-2020 season and won the Greek league title after the league voted to award Panathinaikos the title after the cancellation of the season due to the corona virus.
