Bentil celebrates a basket against Barcelona in the EuroLeague last season with Calathes in background

Ghana Forward Ben Bentil’s title aspirations on the European continent have been thwarted in his debut run in the EuroLeague Basketball competition following the competition’s cancellation.

The 2019-2020 season has been cancelled due concerns over the Corona Virus pandemic that has infected over five million in the world.

The premier continental tournament and second tier competition-EuroCup-were suspended indefinitely on March 12 but the dire nature of the effects of the virus forced authorities to cancel the campaign and focus on next season.

President Jordi Bartomeu said, “Due to reasons beyond our control, we have been forced to cut short the most successful and exciting season in European basketball history” in a statement.

Bentil plays for Greek side Panathinaikos and played 23 out of 28 games in his first run in the competition after transferring from fellow Greek side Peristeri before the season.

Panathinaikos was on course to compete in the playoffs and ranked sixth in the 18 team standings prior to the cancellation.
