Basketballghana.com can confirm the 2019-2020 Angolan Basketball League season has been cancelled due to the threat of the corona virus pandemic.
The news comes at a time the virus has infected 60 people in the African country and the decision was made by the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) on Friday, May 22.
The decision was made in light of the health risks associated with allowing teams to continue play in one of the continent’s best leagues. The corona virus has infected over five million people in the world and forced the Angolan League to suspend the 2019-2020 campaign.
“Given the current [health] circumstances, and in compliance with FAB’s status, the 2019-20 winners of the Angolan Basketball League and winners of the Angolan Cup will not be awarded” the FAB stated.
Petro de Luanda led the league with 49 points five points ahead of close rivals Primeiro D’Agosto and Interclube de Luanda.
Primeiro D’Agosto won the last edition of the FIBA Africa Basketball League in May 2019 before the competition was changed to the Basketball Africa League with the NBA partnering FIBA Africa.
League campaigns in Ghana have been suspended since March with a strict ban on all social gatherings including sports put in place in the country since mid March.
