Basketballghana.com understands University of Education-Winneba (UEW) Basketball Coach Nashiru Yakubu has passed away.
The cause of death is unknown with the veteran Coach passing away earlier today sending shock waves through the basketball circles.
Yakubu was a popular figure in Ghana’s basketball fraternity with an extensive record coaching the sport from the juvenile level to the senior level.
During his run with UEW, the institution became a basketball powerhouse that made several appearances in the finals of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.
Prominent players including Jeffrey Djimatey, Richard Borsah and Kofi Agyemang Prempeh played under him at different stages of their careers.
Veteran Coach Emmanuel Essel “Ghana” Worbil expressed shock when he heard the sad news; Yakubu the Assistant Coach under Worbil for Ghana’s Under 18 National Team in 2004.
He was on UEW’s bench when the Men’s Basketball Team placed third at the 2020 GUSA Games held at the University of Ghana, Legon. UEW placed third at the 2017 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.
