Management of the GSP Basketball League has released a statement detailing the effects the Corona Virus pandemic has had on the now suspended league’s stakeholders. Basketballghana.com received a copy of the statement and the full details are below.
IMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON THE GSP LEAGUE..
It has been a big challenge to all basketball family and Ghana basketball after Suspension of the GSP Basketball league during week 9 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and directives from the government of Ghana. Ghana basketball is not recognized as one of the Giants on the African continent because there are no efforts of promoting the game from the grassroots.
Team managers and coaches have directed Players to engage in their individual trainings( train as if you are playing) to stay fit and also observe social distancing. GSP management believe it will affect player performance for the league and also other student basketball competition like UPAC competition etc. We believe individuals/coaches schedule training will ward away time and boredom.
At this time, schools are closed, students and lecturers are to stay home and observe social distancing. Academics and sporting activities have been suspended. Individual training is key to the fitness of all players.Referee association in the region have also suspended their weekly meetings and programmes.Fans that come and watch games will have to stay home since the likelihood that the virus could spread among all stakeholders (players, coaches, officials and fans) and those who come into contact with them.
Addo Daniel(league manager)- “Our various platforms used to promote the league, players and sponsor are now being used to promote COVID-19 preventive measures etc. Some players are also switching their attention from basketball, trying to engage in other businesses which will earn them some income”
No one knows if and when the league will resume. This is something new. The world we know is put on pause and we don’t know for certain when it will resume. GSP made the correct decision to indefinitely suspend all games for precautionary measures and simply to help curb the spread of the virus.
GSP management will organize several meetings through video conferencing and other virtual means and will closely monitor the situation and updates will be shared to all stakeholders in view of ending the 19/20 regular season.
