Basketballghana.com can confirm University of Education-Winneba (UEW)’s failure to compete in Zone 2 of the 2020 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship was down to the outbreak of Corona Virus.
The team was set to play Takoradi Technical University (TTU), University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) this past weekend at UCC’s Gymnasium.
However, UEW didn’t show up with Ghana’s leading basketball portal gathering their absence was due to a directive from the University authorities to prevent the playing body from travelling as a measure to reduce the level of exposure to the disease.
There have been six confirmed cases in Ghana and that has led to the ban on all social gatherings including sporting events by Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo.
In a related development, organizers of the UPAC Championship-Rite Sports- have suspended the competition with reviews on the line after a month break.
UEW has a silver and bronze medal to its credit in UPAC history; TTU successfully defended its title by beating UCC 33-31 and UMaT 49-25 to lift the zonal trophy and progress to the national stage.
