The University of Ghana (UG) Men’s Basketball Team has won gold for the third time in a row at the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.
This follows a 66-63 win over University of Cape Coast (UCC) in the deciding game in this year’s edition being hosted by UG. The GUSA Games are held biannually.
UG’s latest triumph in the division however, was not without controversy as the game was originally halted for several minutes and later postponed due to crowd trouble.
With UCC leading 51-47 with 7:35 minutes left to play in the final quarter, the game was stopped for officials to calm rising tensions at the venue.
Three sachets of water were thrown on to the court including one aimed directly at the UCC bench all in the final quarter by a vociferous fan base.
A sizable Police presence was needed at the venue to diffuse the tense situation and ensure safety for the respective teams entourage. The disrupted game was played on Friday, January 17.
With the win, UG completed a double win over UCC in the gold medal game as the UG won the Female version of the matchup.
