St. John’s School, Sekondi has clinched an impressive 30-27 win over Opoku Ware School in a very entertaining matchup in Group B of the 2020 Sprite Ball Championship.
The Saints in the process became the first Western Region representative to win a game at the ongoing competition. Fellow regional representative Sekondi College lost 8-49 to Mfantsipim School in Group A.
John’s led 15-7 at the end of the first half after Opoku Ware made another slow start; the team had a poor first half but recovered to clinch a 30-27 win.
This time around, the comeback couldn’t be completed as John’s got crucial baskets late on from Guard Joojo Morrison to ward off Opoku Ware’s threat.
Opoku Ware Guard Essien drilled a three pointer to trim St. John’s lead to five (19-14) but Morrison scored on back to back possessions to go up 27-22 after Opoku Ware threatened to cancel the Saints lead.
Hamza Mumuni fouled out in the final minutes before a four point play from Kwame Yeboah but that wasn’t enough to get Opoku Ware’s second straight win.
In the Girls Division, Wesley Girls High School extended its life in the tournament by clinching a must win 16-15 win over St. Louis Senior High School.
