Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC) Legon has won the 2019 Accra Mayor’s Cup after grabbing a 33-20 win over St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School.
By winning an exciting final game watched by Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mayor Mohammed Adjei Sowah and a host of dignitaries, PRESEC becomes the first team to win the Tournament.
The first quarter had PRESEC take a slender 6-1 lead with Guard Kwame Debrah and Center Abdul Rafik Razak scoring for the Blue Magicians.
Marie Kyelem got Aquinas on the board early in the second quarter and Seth Akrofi scored for PRESEC. Nabil Wahib of St. Thomas Aquinas blocked David Quaynor’s shot attempt but Debrah scored on a fast break and added a tough jump shot. Paa Kofi Ayeh pump faked and scored a layup to put PRESEC up 14-8.
Aquinas Guard Japheth Ayepah scored fast break layups on back to back possessions. Jeffrey Abrokwa scored one of two free throws to end the quarter trailing 11-14.
Debrah slammed the ball on a fast break dunk to break a turn over filled opening minutes in the third quarter. Aquinas got a quick five point response from Ayepah off a corner three point shot and a nifty up and under layup. PRESEC Legon led 19-16 at the end of the third quarter.
PRESEC extended its lead from the free throw line and Ayeh dished a beautiful assist for Abdul Razak to score a layup; the lanky Center scored two more points before Aquinas went on a 4-0 run. Debrah sealed the win with a one handed dunk off a steal.
