University of Ghana (UG) Men’s Basketball Team has suffered its first loss of the 2019 Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division II season.

The tertiary side lost its unbeaten streak after losing 44-48 to veteran side Panthers at the Lebanon House Court in Tudu on Friday, August 30.

UG took an 8-2 lead with five minutes played with Treasure Botchwey scoring on a drive and Habibu Aminu a three point shot. Panthers Emannuel Otoo scored to end UG’s run. Alexander Tawiah delivered a two hand put back slam and Aminu added another deep shot to give UG a 15-10 first quarter.

Tawiah flashed his athleticism by delivering a chase down block and scoring a short jump shot. Panthers hang around getting points from Emmanuel Mensah and Feranmi Olulonyo. Panthers took a 22-21 first half lead. 

Otoo’s three pointer stretched Panthers lead to four (25-21) early in the third quarter. Abibu scored his third shot from three point range off a great ball movement to give UG a 28-27 lead with 2:54 minutes remaining. Botchwey hit a three pointer to give UG a 34-32 third quarter lead.

Score was tied at 41 with 2:04 remaining before Otoo scored a three pointer to give Panthers a 44-41 lead with 1:32 left to play in the game. Olulonyo buried two free throws to give Panthers a 46-42 lead with 14 seconds left. Both teams traded free throws as Panthers sealed a 48-44 win.
