Ghana won’t compete in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China but players with direct connections to the West African country are eligible to play in the tournament for other nations.
The high profile names Awudu Abass and Billy Yakuba Ouattara however had mixed fortunes regarding playing in the tournament.
Abass was named in the final 12 man roster for the tournament but Ouatarra missed out on the final cut for the French National Team.
26 year old Abass-born in Italy to a Ghanaian father- made the cut after being named in the 19 man group ahead of friendly games in Europe and China.
Abass averaged 13.9 points and 4.6 rebounds for club side Leonessa Brescia last season and has been the subject of transfer talk involving clubs in Germany and former team Olimpia Milano.
Ouatarra was named in the reserve side for the French National team but couldn’t make the 12 man roster for China. The 27 year old was born in Tepa, Ghana and played last season Monaco in the French league. He missed the 2017 European Championship after signing for NBA side Brooklyn Nets .
