Angola and Ivory Coast recovered from losses on Day One of the 2019 FIBA Women’s African Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) to score important wins on Day Two.
This year’s competition is taking place at the Dakar Arena in Senegal and 12 nations are battling for the title Nigeria won in 2017.
Angola lost 63-71 surprisingly to Mali but registered 69-49 win over DR Congo to save its campaign from an early exit. After a poor opening game, playmaker Italee Lucas improved her production.
The Interclube veteran star scored 18 points and added four rebounds and six assists in 27 minutes. Lucas also had three steals.
Felizada Jorge was the only Angolan player aside Lucas to score in double digits (10 points) but it was enough to secure the former African Champs first win.
Ivory Coast lost 36-77 to host nation Senegal but managed to beat Egypt 71-67 in Group A. In other games, Cape Verde beat Kenya 64-57 while Cameroon topped Tunisia 95-53.
