Mali Senior National Men’s Team Forward Ibrahim Djambo has lauded FIBA Africa for introducing the AfroCan-a tournament designed for African based players.

The competition which commenced on Friday, July 19 in Mali’s capital Bamako has 12 nations competition; only two spots on reach roster is allocated to foreign based players.

Djambo is one of two foreign based players included in Mali’s team for the tournament which ends on July 28. Djambo plays for Etoile Angers in the French League.

Speaking to FIBA, the 6 foot 10 inch Forward praised the continent’s governing body for the initiative and believes the competition will help players on the continent develop.

“I am very happy to be called in by my federation for the first edition of FIBA AfroCan which my country is also hosting but most especially I am happy for African players who never have the opportunity to represent their country…commend the initiative by FIBA Africa for the introduction of this championship –AfroCan” he said.

Mali beat Algeria 70-68 in its debut game with Djambo scoring 16 points. The host takes on Ivory Coast later tonight.
