Rwanda will host the 2021 FIBA Africa Men’s Basketball Championship (AfroBasket) after getting confirmation over the weekend.

The East African nation beat competition from the likes of Senegal, DR Congo and Ivory Coast to win the hosting rights. This would be the country’s first time as host of Africa’s most prestigious national team competition.

Rwanda’s almost completed ultra modern Kigali Arena is set to be the hot bed of talent on the continent in a couple of years. The arena seats 10,000 spectators.

The Kigali Arena is due to be completed later this month and the grand size of the project played a key role in winning the hosting race.

Rwanda ‘s Basketball Federation President Desire Mugwiza stated winning the rights “a vote of confidence in Rwanda”and “an opportunity to showcase the country to the rest of the world.”

The upcoming AfroBasket is the first edition to be played after four years following changes by FIBA Africa’s decision to switch from a biannual format.

Tunisia are defending champions after winning the 2017 edition.
