Angola’s Primeiro do Agosto sent home fans gathered in Luanda into a frenzy after bagging its ninth FIBA Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague ) title over the weekend.

Agosto beat defending champions AS Sale from Morocco 83-71 in the final game of the continent’s top rated competition hitherto known as the Africa Club Champions Cup.

Veteran Angolan Forward Eduardo Mingas led Agosto with 20 points and 11 rebounds with Point Guard Manny Quezada adding 17 points.

Sale 34 year old Shooting Guard Wayne Arnold scored 21 points but his performance couldn’t fetch him a third straight continental crown. Arnold won the title first with Egypt’s Al Ahly before joining forces with Sale.

Despite extending its record to nine trophies, this is Agosto’s first African title since 2013; Sale missed out on becoming the first team to successfully defend the title since 2013.

Mingas was named Most Valuable Player and walked away with the Top Rebounder Award. Smouha SC from Egypt beat Tunisian side JS Kairouan 69-58 to place third in the tournament.
