Teshie Vikings came on top of an overly physical matchup against Francophone Stars with a 36-33 win in the first of a three game series.
The game took place at the Tema Community 4 Court to mark the start of this year’s Tema Community Basketball League postseason.
The fixture failed to live up to expectation and was rife with fouls from both teams and a general lack of quality to entertain a sizable section of supporters at the venue. The low score recorded was a product of the below par quality matchup.
Vikings and Stars opened the third game of the night with a scrappy first quarter that ended 9-4 for Vikings. The highlight moments were marked by blocks from Stars Emmanuel Kuffour and Rangers Ekow Abaidor.
Francophone took a 15-13 lead midway through the second quarter with Cedric Nambi leading the charge. Vikings Edem Franklin and Kingsley Quist combined for a layup but the scores remained close as Francophone held on for a 20-19 first half lead.
In a frantic final minutes, Vikings piped Stars in the final minutes to clinch the three point win. Game 2 takes place at the same venue on October 21.
