Cape Verde will play Guinea later this weekend for a place in the 2019 FIBA African Basketball Women’s Championship (AfroBasket) in a two legged encounter.

Both encounters will take place in the West African nation’s capital, Praia, on Friday, May 17 and the second leg comes off on Sunday, May 19.

Cape Verde is attempting to reach the continental championship for the first time since 2013 where the team ended as the ninth best in the competition.

Six members from that team have been invited to play in both legs. Cape Verde opened camp earlier this week on Monday.

Djenifer Veiga, Aylin Pires, Lorreta Rocha, Jade Leitao, Ornela Livramento, and Juvelina Bento have been called up for the upcoming qualifiers.

Rising star Joseana Vaz, 19, got a call up after starring at the 2018 Under 18 Championship. She averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds.

The top four nations in the 2017 Championship qualified automatically to this year’s competition. Cameroon joined the list after beating DR Congo twice earlier this month.
