US Monastir Basketball Club has captured the 2019 Tunisian Basketball League title for the first time in 14 years thanks to a 3-1 win in the League finals series in the best of five.

Monastir clinched the title with a 79-73 win in Game 4 over ES Rades ending a solid run that had the team beat AfroLeague semifinalist JS Kairouan in the semifinals.

Former Accra Basketball League (ABL) standout Romeo Enan’s Dalia Sport Grombalia finished the season with three wins and seven losses.

The achievement is more significant to Monastir after falling twice in the latter stages of the season to Rades in previous years.

In 2017, the team lost 69-74 to Rades in the semifinals of the AfroLeague-then known as Africa Club Champions Cup; Rades eventually won the title.

On the domestic front, Monastir lost to Rades in the League Final before atoning for both losses with the crucial six point win in Game 4 of the 2019 Finals Series.

The two sides clash again for the Tunisian Cup on Saturday, May 11 with Rades attempting to clinch a trophy in 2019 after exiting this year’s AfroLeague at the quarterfinal stage.

On the other hand, Monastir has qualified to compete in the NBA’s 2020 Basketball Africa League.
