Nungua Coldstore clinched a close win over Spintex Knights in the Tema Community Basketball League earlier tonight. Nungua beat Knights 40-37 for its third win in three games this season.
The matchup took place at Tema Community 4 Court in one of two big games in the weekend’s round. Prior to the contest, Francophone Stars beat Tema Wildcats 34-30 and Tema Rockets recorded its first win this season thanks to a 58-21 win over Teshie Rangers.
Kwame Boamah scored the game’s first points from the free throw line. Emmanuel Wolff gathered a missed three point shot attempt from Djan and scored to give Coldstore a 4-0 lead. Emmanuel Ocquaye scored close to the free throw but Dennis Dugbennu responded with a three point shot to give Coldstore a 9-3 first quarter lead.
Kontor Appiah drained a jump shot and added a layup off a beautiful drive after stealing the ball. Kwame Opoku and Dugbennu connected on a pick and roll to make the score 13-7 for Nungua. Opoku scored four straight points to stretch Coldstore’s lead to 10 (17-7). The teams traded baskets to end the first half with Knights trailing 10-21.
Bashiru Mohammed completed a three point play and Benjamin Omari scored a layup in a fast start for Knights. Kingsley Quist ended Knights run with an unorthodox layup before Omari added a three point play. Coldstore Center Awuletey got back to back baskets to close out the third quarter with his side wielding a 30-19 lead.
Wolff buried a pair of three pointers sandwiching Appiah’s converted attempt from the top of the key. John Okumoh scored four points with four from front court partner Ocquaye for Knights to trail 34-36 with a minute remaining. Ocquaye buried three free throws to close the deficit to 37-38.
Opoku was sent to the line and buried both attempts to give Coldstore a 40-37 win.
Homeside Tema Community 4 beat rival Tema Community 2 57-44 to end proceedings.
