University of Ghana (UG) Women’s Basketball Team started poorly but finished strong in its matchup against Ghana Navy in the Accra Basketball League (ABL) Women’s Division earlier tonight at the Prisons Court in Cantonments, Accra.
However, UG fell 22-27 to Navy in a very good outing for the tertiary team; UG will look back on a slow start that had them trail 2-16 at the end of the first quarter.
UG got on the board first off a jump shot but Navy quickly responded getting points from Juliana Cudjoe and Selina Quaye to lead 16-2 after the first quarter.
Esther Manpong scored all seven points for UG including a three point shot. Navy missed a ton of shots in the second quarter and ended with a scoreless run but led 16-9.
Maria Mensah ended Navy’s drought scoring one of two free throw attempts. UG’s Suzzy Akwei scored close to the rim after grabbing an offensive rebound. Manpong scored off a drive to make the score Navy 21-13 UG.
Gloria Dzaka completed a three point play to reduce the deficit to five (16-21). Mensah and Juliana scored for Navy with Cudjoe’s shot beating the buzzer for a 25-16 third quarter lead. Latifa Issaka, Dzaka and Lawrencia Adjei scored for UG to reduce deficit to five 22-27 with 43 seconds remaining but Navy hang on for the win.
