Nigeria’s Senior Men’s National Team (D’Tigers) Forward Augustin Okosun is counting on a big performance in the FIBA Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague) to stake a claim in the national team’s participation in the 2019 World Cup.
The World Cup takes place in China from August 31 to September 15 and Nigeria is one of five African countries set to participate.
Angola, Senegal, Tunisia and Ivory Coast alongside Nigeria will represent the continent in the competition that has USA as defending champions.
In a chat with FIBA, Okosun who plays for AfroLeague semifinalist Smouha SC, is looking forward to a deep run in the club competition to make the final cut after playing for Nigeria in the first round of World Cup qualifiers.
“I will give everything to wear that jersey again. I hope they [coaching crew] get to see what I have be doing with Smouha SC and that I convince them I can be part of the team” he said.
Nigeria is in Group B with Russia, Argentina and Korea. Smouha’s semifinal opponent is to be determined on Saturday, April 27.
