Basketballghana.com can confirm the new upcoming FIBA AfroCan competition will exclusively have players from local leagues on the continent compete.
The new initiative from FIBA Africa is to provide another platform for players on the continent to compete and showcase their skills for spots in the national teams.
The AfroCan is scheduled to be played biannually in light of Africa’s premier competition-AfroBasket-new timeline of four years.
Mali’s bid to host the competition’s maiden edition was officially accepted and the tournament is likely to run from July 17-28. The dates however, are provisional and subject to change.
Qualification games are due to start earlier; Qualifiers in Zone V are to be played from June 26-July 1 in Kampala, Uganda.
Introducing this competition is a good move from FIBA Africa as more African nations continue to rely on players outside the continent for competitions.
Nigeria won the 2015 AfroBasket with Ben Uzoh as the only player from the Nigerian Basketball League. Uzoh played for Lagos Islanders then.
