University of Ghana (UG) Men’s Basketball Team has clinched the 2019 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.
UG clinched a 37-32 win over Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in a very tense final played at the University of Ghana Central Court.
The title is UG’s fourth straight win on the biggest tertiary basketball platform in Ghana. UG’s super run commenced in 2016.
The result marks a disappointing end to the campaign for TTU who featured in the UPAC final for the first time in the institution’s history.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) finished in third place behind TTU with Accra Technical University (ATU) forfeiting the bronze medal game.
TTU got on the score board first from three point range. UG got points from the free throw line from Wolff and Treasure Botchwey. Wolff added a three point shot to give UG an 8-3 first quarter lead.
TTU tied the game at 14 midway through the second quarter but a three point shot and Gerard Sappor converted one of two free throws to give UG an 18-14 second quarter.
After losing RIchard Donor to a head injury Benjamin Sagoe came off the bench to lead TTU to a 24-21 third quarter lead.
TTU stretched the lead to 26-21 but lost momentum after Botchwey drained a three point shot and UG scored off a turnover. Another big three point shot from Wolff got UG a 30-28 lead that put UG on the road to victory.
