Accra Technical University (ATU) has been drawn in the dreaded Group of Death at the Quarterfinal stage of the 2019 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.
The two time winners of Ghana’s most prestigious tertiary basketball competition fate in the knockout phase was decided earlier today in the live draw that aired on Kwese Free Sports.
ATU is in Group B with Marshalls University College, Radford University College and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
Marshalls and KNUST won the silver medal in 2015 and 2017 and have been consistent over the years while producing standout performers in the process.
Former KNUST Guard Nana Owusu Afriyie and former Marshalls Power Forward David Asingar were nominated in the Tertiary Player of the Year Category at the 2015 and 2016 Ghana Basketball Awards respectively.
Despite being novices at this stage of the competition, Radford has a nucleus of top performers from Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division I side Adenta Leopards to count on.
Group A has defending champions University of Ghana (UG), Takoradi Technical University, Catholic University College and Koforidua Technical University.
The top two teams in each group qualify to the semifinals. The quarterfinal games are scheduled to be played on Friday, April 12 at UG’s Central Court. Semifinal games and the final game come off a day later at the same venue.
This year’s UPAC is sponsored by CAL Bank and MTN.
