University of Ghana (UG) is scheduled to play Regional Maritime University in the opening game of Zone 8 of the 2019 Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship Basketballghana.com can confirm.

UG are three time winners of Ghana’s biggest tertiary basketball competition and roll into today’s tournament as defending champions.

The Host institution has been drawn in the zone alongside Regional Maritime, Central University and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

This is the final round of qualifiers in the preliminary stage of this year’s championship after the conclusion of seven zonal qualifiers.

UG is attempting to make its fourth straight quarterfinal appearance and is heavily tipped to do so ahead of the remaining members in the zone.

Regional Maritime and Central University have not progressed beyond the preliminary stage; GIMPA on the other hand, has made two quarterfinal appearances in 2016 and 2017.

Central University plays GIMPA in the next game at the UG Central Court. Only the zonal winners progress to the knockout phase which takes place at UG on April 11 and 12. This year’s UPAC is sponsored by CAL Bank and MTN.
