The maiden FIBA Africa Basketball League (AfroLeague) tips off tonight in Cairo, Egypt featuring teams in Group C. The competition was previously known as Africa Club Championship.
2017 winners Al Ahly of Egypt is the host team and is set to compete against Primeiro do Agosto from Angola, Ferroviario Beira from Mozambique and REG from Rwanda.
Ahly plays first against Agosto at 20:30 GMT with REG taking on Ferroviario Beira in the next game with a top two finish earning qualification to the next stage of the competition.
Agosto is the competition’s most successful team winning 11 titles but has won the trophy for six years and aims to end the drought.
Ferroviario is betting on its beefed up roster to make a statement in the tough group; the team signed Uganda international and experienced Shooting Guard Robinson Opong ahead of the tournament.
REG is the first Rwandan side participating in the continental competition since 2006 and is widely considered the underdogs in Group C.
After sitting out of the 2018 edition and failing to defend the continental title, Ahly has a big chance to qualify from the group and inch closer to another title.
