Groups marking the preliminary stage of the 2019 AfroLeague have been made and subsequently released with Zone 3 representatives falling in Group A and Group B.
The competition, hitherto known as FIBA Africa Clubs Champions Cup, is set to commence with 16 teams on February 8. The draw was made in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Ghana’s representative in last year’s FIBA Zone 3 Championship- Braves of Customs- missed out on qualifying to the AfroLeague. Rivers Hoopers, Elan Sportif and Civil Defenders qualified at the expense of the serial Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division I winners.
Zone 3 Winners Rivers Hoopers has been drawn in Group A alongside with reigning champions AS Sale, Tunisian side JS Kairouan and Malian side SLAC.
Hoopers won all games to qualify as zonal winners but faces a tough battle to rank in the top two spots to progress to the next stage.
In Group B, Defenders and Sportif join 2018 finalist ES Rades and BC Terreur. Teams thayt progress to the next stage will be engaged in home and away matches.
