Winners of the last edition of the hitherto African Champions Cup, AS Sale, has been drawn in Group A for the upcoming competition now known as the AfroLeague.
The change of name is part of a wider range of changes set to be implemented in Africa’s premier league club competition. Home and away games determines which teams progress to the semifinal stage.
However, qualified teams will be play round robin games in the various groups at the preliminary stage which has 16 teams competing.
Sale won its maiden continental title last year thanks to a 77-69 win over Etoile Sportive De Rades in the final game. Sale is in Group A with Nigeria’s Rivers Hoopers, JS Kairouan of Tunisia and SLAC.
Last year’s beaten finalist Rades are in Group B with Nigeria’s Civil Defenders, Elan Sportif from Benin and BC Terreur from DR Congo. Defenders and Sportif recently competed in the FIBA Zone 3 tournament against Ghana’s Braves of Customs.
2017 winners Al Ahly is in Group C with top ranked Petro Luanda leading Group D. Below is a full break breakdown of the groups:
