Angola Male National Basketball Team Captain Carlos Morais has opined a unique blend of new and veteran players is responsible for the team’s World Cup qualification success.
The team has qualified to compete at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China ahead of the final round of qualifying games next month.
Despite winning 11 of 13 African Nations Championship Titles, the Southern African country has been overtaken by Nigeria and Tunisia in recent years.
Part of the reason was Angola’s long reliance on the old guard but under Coach Will Voight, young players have been infused in the team giving it a hitherto missing balance.
Speaking to FIBA, the 33 year old Point Guard stated “It’s the combination we have with young players. We’ve found a balance. Moving forward if we can keep going like this, if we can keep everyone going like that, we’re going to be very hard to beat… If we keep working the way we have been working with Coach Will and his staff, we are going to be better in the future.”
Angola, Nigeria and Tunisia have qualified to this year’s World Cup and two spots are up for grabs for teams on the continent.
