The 2019 Sprite Ball Championship runs from January 11-12 at the El Wak Stadium in Accra with 12 schools to compete in the Boys Division and eight schools in the Girls Division.
Pope John Senior High School and Junior Seminary has qualified to feature in the Boys Division at the upcoming edition of Ghana’s biggest high school basketball tournament.
However, for the first time since 2016, the school will do so without eccentric Coach James Okine on the sidelines after leaving the program earlier this year.
Okine guided Pope John to two bronze medals and a fourth place finish during his three year run with the “Daasebr33” lads.
After clinching third place in January 2018, Okine was replaced with Kofi Elias ending a brilliant run where Okine formed strong bonds with standout Guards Emmanuel Dery and Sanisa Merdi.
A veteran player for Tema Youth and Nungua Coldstore in the Accra and Tema Basketball Leagues respectively, Elias is under pressure to at least match Coach Okine’s exploits in next year’s competition.
