The 2019 Sprite Ball Trophy Tour rounded up recently after making stops in several regions in Ghana including the nation’s capital, Greater Accra Region.

The large and enthusiastic crowds that greeted the Sprite Ball Trophy will certainly live long in the memory books of the competition’s storied past.

However, the Ashanti Regional leg of the tour made the headlines recently after rivals Prempeh College and Opoku Ware School traded barbs when the respective schools hosted the Trophy Tour entourage.

During the visit to Prempeh College, Assistant Headmaster Ernest Gyamfi called Opoku Ware the “Santase Cowboys” in reference to the school’s location in Santase in an interview.

In response, the Assistant Headmaster of Opoku Ware George Owusu Gyimah called Prempeh College “Sofoline Mates” in reference to the school’s close proximity to the Sofoline Interchange in Kumasi.

The school’s are unrivalled in their dominance of basketball in the region and are the only representatives from the region to win medals in the Boys Division at the Sprite Ball Championship.

Opoku Ware won the December 2016 edition while Prempeh placed second in 2010. Both have qualified to represent the region in the 2019 edition which runs from January 11-12 at the El Wak Stadium in Accra.
