Pope John (yellow and blue) beat Sacred Heart 21-12 to clinch bronze in January this year.
Pope John Senior High School and Junior Seminary Basketball Coach Kofi Elias has stated determination was the key to his team’s success in the Eastern Regional Qualifiers for next year’s Sprite Ball.

The 2019 Sprite Ball takes place from January 11-12 at the El Wak Stadium in Accra with 12 schools participating in the Boys Divisions and eight schools in the Girls Division.

Pope John is one of two reps from the Eastern Region in the Boys Division; rival Koforidua Senior High Technical School (KSTS) qualified alongside Pope John.

Speaking to Basketballghana.com exclusively after guiding his side to clinch a qualifying ticket via a 28-22 win over Okuapeman Senior High School, Elias stated:

“Determination did it for us…there were some kind of doubts with the guys but they built up their confidence and came back strong”.

Elias replaced eccentric personality James Okine as Head Coach for Pope John prior to the games; Okine won two bronze medals in three Sprite Ball editions with the team.
