Nungua Coldstore has secured its second Tema Community Basketball League title after beating Tema Heat 53-49 in Game 3 of the 2018 Finals Series.
The series was tied prior to the game and Coldstore left it late to go on a big run and clinch the win and league title. The team won the division in 2016.
Heat fought gallantly and looked certain to shock the most dominant team this season as the former held a seven point lead with little over three minutes remaining.
However, a bizarre spell of possessions punctuated by the absence of key man Benjamin Omari let Coldstore back into the game for good.
Nungua sealed the win with a pair of free throws from Kwame Opoku and Kofi Agyei. Heat’s Philip Barley’s miss from the same spot at the other end cost his side the chance to tie the game at 51.
Francophone Stars won bronze ahead of Tema Community 2 in its maiden participation in the Tema League. Community 2 failed to turn for the game.
Prosper Dorsu missed two free throws in the final minutes of the third quarter with Heat up 37-32. Coldstore Forward Kofi Elias scored a layup on a fast break and Emmanuel Wolff sank two shots from the free throw. Coldstore trailed 36-37 at the end of the third quarter.
Kofi Agyei tipped in a lob pass from Kwame Opoku Pool to give Coldstore a 38-37 lead and Wolff made it 40-38.
Heat went on an 11 point run as Karim Awudu and Fred Yeboah drained three point shots to retake the lead 47-40.
Coldstore responded with a momentum changing six point run as Heat lost control with the game on the line. Heat failed to get a grip after main star Benjamin Omari fouled out of the game 3 minutes left in the game. Agyei, Kwame Boamah Djan and Opoku scored from the charity stripe to give Coldstore the four point win.
