Devin Booker wants to be on a superteam at some point in his career, and he wants it to be with the Phoenix Suns.
“Dynasties only last for so long. I’m not wishing trades upon any of the superteams,” Booker said, per Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports. “I’d like to build a superteam. I’d like the superteam to come to me.”
Booker is emerging as a true superstar. The fourth-year guard is averaging 24.9 points and a career-high 7.1 assists per game for the Suns this season, transitioning into the role of primary facilitator given Phoenix’s issues at point guard. He’s also shooting 44.8 percent from the field, though a career-low 32.2 percent from three.
Regardless of his numbers, Booker has shown a willingness to play the role the Suns require of him.
“If it’s playmaking, I’ll do that,” he said. “If it’s scoring I’ll do that. I’m trying to figure out that balance. It’s the position I’m in now. We’ve had a lot of different lineups.”
That outlook will be important if Phoenix ever builds that superteam. The playmaking ability Booker has showcased this season should fit nicely with other star players.
It appears the Suns could have a running mate with star potential for Booker in rookie center Deandre Ayton, who is averaging 16.9 points and 10.4 rebounds this season. Ayton appears destined to become one of the better low-post scorers in the NBA, though questions about his rim-protection (0.7 blocks per game this season) and defense could limit his potential.
What separates players like Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis from the pack of talented big men in the NBA is their ability to be dynamic difference-makers on both offense and defense. Ayton has a long way to go on the defensive front.
As for landing another superstar, the Suns could turn to the draft again after a disappointing start to the season has left them with a 4-15 record, tied for second-worst in the NBA. Free agency or trades could also be an option, though it could be tough to convince elite players to either sign or re-sign in Phoenix given their recent struggles and unproven roster.
So if Booker is going to have his superteam, the Suns may need to hit big on a player in the 2019 NBA draft. Otherwise, it’s possible that superteam will have to come with another franchise.
