Opoku Ware School (OWASS) has won the opening game of this year’s Ashanti Regional Basketball qualifiers for next year’s Sprite Ball Championship.
December 2016 national winners and defending regional Champions Opoku Ware delivered a 30-11 win over Kumasi High Senior High School in the Boys Division at the Our Lady of Grace Senior High School in Mampongteng.
Opoku Ware failed to deliver on a successful title defence as it crashed out at the group stage following two losses in three games.
With new faces replacing the title winning core of the likes of Emmanuel Agyapong, Emmanuel Opare and Harris Amuzu, OWASS got off to a quick 6-0 start and rolled on to victory.
OWASS beat Prempeh College under controversial circumstances to win last year’s regional title and Prempeh had to sweat for a 9-6 win over Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School.
The next national High School championship is set to take place at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra in January, 2019 with Osu Presbyterian Senior High School as defending champions.
