The shocking news of Secretary General of basketball world governing body FIBA, Patrick Baumann’s death has been confirmed.

The 51 year old passed away a few hours ago after suffering a heart attack in Buenos Aires, Argentina attending the Youth Olympic Games in the South American country.

Baumann was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) prior to his passing despite receiving urgent medical attention after suffering the attack.

“On behalf of the entire FIBA family, I wish to express our deepest sympathies and pass on our condolences to Patrick’s wife Patricia, their family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this very difficult time” FIBA President Horacio Muratore stated.

To honour his passing, the Olympic flag will be flown at half mast for three days at the games.

Baumann served as FIBA Secretary General since 2002, had degrees in Sports Management and Law and was a former player, Coach and referee.

He joined FIBA in 1994 where he rose to Secretary General.
